Great Reads

Choices
Do you ever read a book that makes you laugh, and makes you cry, and makes you feel everything else in between?
I've just finished reading NOTES FROM THE MIDNIGHT DRIVER, by Jordan Sonnenblick. I laughed uproariously through the first chapter or two. (Walkie, talkie, barfie...well, you have to read it to get the joke.)
About a third of the way through the book, I realized how attached I was getting to the characters, and how deeply I cared about them.
And, near the end, yup, cried, cried, cried.
It's the story of a kid who makes an error in judgement, and is sentenced to community service at a senior's center. He is paired with a difficult old Jewish man, learns a lot of great Yiddish words, and ends up learning about himself and life.
Also a great read, again by Jordan, is DRUMS, GIRLS, AND DANGEROUS PIE. It certainly wasn't what I expected from the title (not sure what I did expect), but was an engaging, funny, sad, hopeful kind of book.
I also read RULES, by Cynthia Lord. Terrific! Catherine's brother is autistic, and so she writes down rules for him to remember. No toys in the fish tank. Chew with your mouth closed. Keep your pants on in public.
It's a funny book, but explores issues of belonging, and of acceptance of someone who is different. It drew me in, and kept me mesmerized. (I read it in one sitting.)
And, don't miss TANTALIZE, by Cynthia Leitich Smith. She makes you believe, with a capital B. Werepeople? Of course they exist. Shapeshifters? Absolutely. And when Quincie and her uncle decide to do over the family restaurant with a vampire theme, things happen. This book will have you wondering: are you predator or prey?
Next on my list:
DEVILISH, by Maureen Johnson. Gotta love that cover!
